Making it Cool to Learn

Why do we love kids’ science shows that have big explosions out of a test tube or things that seem like magic. For a percentage of kids, this method or attraction works to draw them in to mysteries of science. They pursue it more.

What is it that truly taps and transforms a child’s interest from a nudge into the direction of exploration vs full on mountaineer to traverse over the country side finding new worlds like Lewis and Clark or Daniel Boone?

What makes a good teacher? What is the extra mile they go thru for themselves and are then able to draw children in? When we were kids we can all safely say we don’t know what we don’t know. Knowledge and awareness are given to us in life thru nuances and we take it really without blinking an eye. But as an adult, we kind of figure that Calculus may be needed in the world but is it really needed by us just to measure lumber or a baking recipe. The answer to that question may need to be answered by a true math whiz. I leave that to my brother. Thankfully, my brother got me thru a lot of math classes.

Deciding the fundamentals, basics vs building blocks and what level or standard we are building to has actually become clearer in recent years because of all the supposed “experts”

As a coach, what makes me an expert? My own life experiences for one. My ability to have intuition. My “hunches” may not want to be accepted in the moment I speak them to anyone but I have another hunch.

I bet if you let it sink in, you see my spidey senses are spot on. Trust me, I don’t share unless I am just compelled to. It is a force bigger than myself that makes me speak up.

I took a test called the Kolbe test. My number one result designated me as a fact finder. I think that fits. I have a curious nature and researching comes easy for me. I remember taking the standardized tests and the Dewey Decimal system always scored almost perfect for me everytime. For awhile I thought I was going to be a school librarian and in my later years a media librarian. While that has not been the case, I value all librarians and teachers and educators of life long learning.

I think we have all had those teachers that made it cool to learn. Think about facts or trivia that you have found online or in a book or a radio show/podcast or TV Talk show or even in school, and especially those who are fans of the show Jeopardy. It made you feel excited. You wanted to know more about it and curiosity took you to a new level of the why’s and how’s. So when you are the subject of the fact finding mission, how does that make you feel? Have you ever thought of being the Sherlock Holmes or mystery solver of your own life?

Coaching allows you to follow the puzzle pieces and connect the dots. You are your own crossword puzzle with short statements and fill in the block answers. Sometimes others are using their ink pen on the Sunday New York Times crossword version of your life but when you are doing the work, it is your turn to be the one to fill in the blanks. You get the puzzle all to yourself. The answers are solely yours to make it work. It is cool to learn your aha moments and the discoveries may lead to new action.
