I Need Louder Energy

When I was pondering on becoming a life coach, one thing I noticed about all my heroes who are already master life coaches were that they were veracious readers. I AM NOT! At least not until I started my journey. I am a huge fan of the process of getting kids to read, I am a big proponent of getting books into the hands of kids and well, anyone. I own my share of a collection. But when it comes to free time, I AM A TV GIRL. Now in an academic setting of polite culture filled with NPR, BBC, New York Times and Washington Post, Amazon available to get them in your hands, even obscure ones or even your just local neighborhood second hand bookstore, reading and knowledge always come first.

I learned a long time ago that I was a TV junkie. I am a visual person. I can learn from the Discovery channel and the beautiful cinematography. But of course I realize that I am asking someone else to be the middle man and be the liaison for content. I suppose perhaps it is the way their presentation falls into my lap vs me scouring the bookshelves in the library of the adventure I will come across.

I do like to read. Not opposed to it. When I finally settle myself to get past chapter two, the blessings and love for reading, like all avid readers does come alive for me. Everything people say about reading comes true. IMAGINATION. Watching someone else’s work does something different for me. STIMULATION.

My imagination as a writer is pretty vivid on my own when writing my own content or ideas. But watching TV – well that stimulation just stirs me during the day when not everything does.

I NEED LOUDER ENERGY.

We all get stuck in our habits, patterns and ruts. Television in all of its forms (Cable, Streaming, DVD’s, etc) either stimulate or for some dull the emotion, stress, pressure and bring new surroundings into our lives. When we don’t have the chance to connect with others, we latch key kids from the 1980’s all of a sudden had our 22 minute sitcom families at our remote fingertips. Everything was cut and dry, we got our teaching message given to us and had resolution. The vibration of most episodes was not overly upsetting and we could breathe, taking a break from our own lives.

Maybe as someone who grew up surrounded by people but still felt alone, the TV shows felt safe. Whereas, reading made me connect to myself more and that was sometimes without knowing it, anxiety driven. The energy was just different. Not really a conscious drive but an emotional one to be connected and have a chance to learn and grow. The energy was just different.

Fast forward to today. TV helps us see what could be. But reading truly does give us the emotional quotient and skill set to navigate society on a different level.

One thing about the ladies who are coaches and leaders in the industry, well all women in all industries for that matter, is that no matter their personality of academia or level of sophistication or their need to nurture, is that they all have curiosity and they grow that each day by reading. Every one of them writes each day. If you were to speak to an English professor asking them how you can write better, their first reply is typically READ. Learning the viewpoints from others in this exciting genre of reading and you don’t have to even interact or respond is a giant gift. No Nielsen ratings or bombardments of commercials or even dependent on electricity (maybe other than a light).

The purity of reading is an energy all to itself. Yes, on the surface the volume of a TV has always given me a loud energy but that same energy can turn on me because it isn’t under my tempo. It is someone else’s. Reading allows me to contemplate and set the dynamic for my own energy.

In the world we live in, especially after 2020, learning the tools and how to apply towards that energy is something I do in my coaching. We work on personal development. We show up to battle the bad habits and we conquer patterns. Good habits on a checklist are all over the place – eat well, exercise, sleep, take your vitamins, drink plenty of water, etc. But first we have to learn what we don’t recognize or acknowledge.
