Blog Episode 22
Original Overwhelm Obstacle
I am a fan of James Bond movies – 007. He is amazing at overcoming obstacles and we rarely see him get overwhelmed. Other than a laser coming towards him when he is tied down and it inches up at a rapid rate, he usually keeps his cool.
Have you noticed in the course of your life the patterns that form? Sometimes we find ourselves in current situations and it feels new until the feeling of overwhelm comes. OOO – Original Overwhelm Obstacle.
Yes they are the letter O but for this purpose, what if they were zeros. I much rather be like 007 going thru each obstacle with a cool, clear head and assess the situation to get me out of dire straits. Thankfully, my life doesn’t really involve crime mobsters trying to dominate the world. Although, that doesn’t mean I haven’t had my share of stories that are outlandish in my life. And trust me when keeping your cool was very necessary to get you out of it.
Being overwhelmed from daily activities or out of the ordinary is common. Sometimes we repress the feelings and integrate that into our daily lives just to cope. At some point though, it is like a callous that keeps forming harder and harder. It does provide some slight protection but you also begin to not feel.
By dealing with our original overwhelm, we become more reliable and in tune. Our chance to be like 007 allows us to be transparent and open with what we are facing. We handle the situation with authenticity. Whatever your version of the people and things you connect with like 007 and His Majesty’s Secret Service now have a truer version of you. Things that are a big deal to others now are within reason because your coping skills have become finer.
You can see a problem and analyze it working thru your feelings, not hiding from them or pushing them down. The next time you come across it, it becomes less of a hassle and pretty soon, you become the go to person in “nipping it in the bud”.
Being overwhelmed is normal. Law knows I have had a lifetime of going thru that. But in recent years, I now work really hard to feel it and walk thru it. There is too much to see and do in this life. That feeling of being stuck doesn’t get you anywhere. And if you aren’t careful, not taking any action will land you in quicksand.
Being pro-active in recognizing the original obstacle of overwhelm in your life helps you move forward past any new obstacles. Our circumstances change all the time but our reactions and feelings about that are deep rooted. It forms who we are. Those people who choose to take turtle steps and do the work usually bring new energy into their lives and their goals become more obtainable.
In coaching, we are not doing therapy but we are tapping into our present.
We know what we want or at least what we don’t want to go thru.
We know that the overwhelm when going thru obstacles can grow when we are on our own. Coaching provides a space that lets you connect the dots. It allows us to turn around our perception and let our story have new adventures. In the end, we get to be like 007 and find our new way in the world toward ourselves.
